Sailing
Broadstairs Sailing Club is primarily a dinghy racing club and our aim is to promote racing activity suitable for members of all ages and abilities. The sailing season is split into series, each consisting of 16 to 18 races, running from late March to the end of October. There are 2 series run on Saturday afternoon and 3 series on Sunday morning all with 2 races scheduled each day. The popular Thursday evening series runs from April to August with one race each Thursday. Racing is currently run on a handicap basis with a wide range of boats from Toppers to Contenders with Lasers being the largest fleet. In addition to the main series there are a number of separate trophy events held over one day, a weekend or one month all designed to encourage racing at all levels. The annual Dyson Dash charity event regularly raises money for the local Hospice. Full details of the Sailing Programme can be found here. Non-competitive activities including cruises and recreational sailing are organised during the year and members not wishing to race are welcome to take to the water whilst scheduled racing is taking place.
In addition to Club racing, BSC hosts open meetings during the year for a number of dinghy classes and will consider requests from class associations to host area or national championships for small to medium sized fleets. Past events have included open meetings for Laser 5000, Laser 4000, Laser 2000, Laser, ISO, Snipe, RS 600, RS Vareo and Nationals for Laser 5000, Snipe & ISO’s.
The race programme is supported by the Club’s fleet of three 5m XS RIB’s all with 40HP engines and growing team of members qualified to RYA Powerboat Level 2 as a minimum. Training in powerboats and race management is provided by Club members qualified as Powerboat Instructors and RYA Race Officers emphasising the Club’s commitment to provide a quality racing experience for all members.
Broadstairs members have enjoyed success in National, European and International events over a number of years and our junior members are consistently well placed in Kent and National Schools events.
