Level 2 Powerboat Handling

The RYA Power Boat Level 2 is the most popular powerboat training course, the one evening and two days over which it is run gives plenty of time for both practical instruction and theory. The powerboat level 2 course’s aim is to teach powerboat handling and seamanship in powerboats.
The course costs £80 to BSC members, This reduced price reflects the duties and contribution you will make to the club upon completion of the course.
As BSC is a coastal-based club we are able to award certificates with a coastal and planing endorsement. This is the highest and most versatile version of the course that will enable you to helm a boat on any type of water including rivers, lakes or the open sea.

Minimum age: 14

Course content: Launching and recovery, boat handling, securing to a buoy, anchoring, leaving and coming alongside, man overboard and more. Self-sufficient powerboater in the right conditions, aware of own limitations and those of craft.

Course to runs from 6pm to 9pm Friday and 9am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday.

Limited to 3 people per instructor. Minimum of two to make the course run.

Instructions

Please bring clothes you do not mind getting wet in. Especially footwear. A rain jacket, and some waterproof trousers if you have them.
If nice weather shorts and a tee-shirt will be ok, don’t forget sun cream and a hat, if hot.
Cold weather – layers will be needed and warm socks.
Alternatively, wetsuits and sailing attire is appropriate as long as it is warm.
Remember to bring dry clothes and a towel for after.

Lunch – We will have about 45 minutes for lunch.

Please also bring a passport photo with you for your certificate.

RYA Safety Boat

This two-day course provides the skills required when acting as an escort craft, safety boat or coach boat for a fleet of dinghies, windsurfers or canoes, or for racing or training activities.

It includes rescue techniques and elements of race management and mark laying.

Assumed knowledge – Basic understanding of sailing boats and windsurfers. RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate and current RYA First Aid certificate must be held prior to this course.

Minimum duration – 2 consecutive days

Minimum age – 16

Limited to 6 people per instructor. Minimum of four to make the course run.

Course content

Preparation, boat handling, dinghy rescue, windsurfer rescue, kayak or canoe rescue (can be covered as theory), towing, end-of-day procedures, safety, suitability of craft, local factors, communication, rescuing other water users.

Ability after the course

Able to provide safety or support cover to a range of craft, particularly sailing or windsurfing.
