Learning to Sail

Learning to Sail

As a recognised RYA Training Centre, Broadstairs Sailing Club is able to offer members (children 8 and over and adults) training and coaching sessions during the sailing season. These are taught within the framework of the RYA National Sailing Scheme and Youth Sailing Scheme by members who are qualified RYA instructors.

All sessions are organised and staffed by club members giving up their time to encourage people into the sport. We are able to sign log books and issue final RYA qualifications. Details of the RYA National Sailing Schemes can be found at www.rya.org.uk

The dates are:

 15th July, 22nd July29th July,

They are not RYA training courses but are a development session aimed at improving skills. These sessions count towards sailing days that can be entered into the RYA logbook to count as days on the water. It is essential that those who have completed 1 or more of our courses  attend these days to progress quicker through subsequent levels. These sessions are included as part of the membership and consequently no payment is required. Booking for these sessions will be via a general email to all club members.

For those children new to sailing and over the age of 8:

The children will learn basic boating skills and receive an introduction to sailing, enabling them to have fun afloat. Whilst the course will follow the RYA Youth Sailing Level 1 syllabus, the training will be delivered informally and will include a number of fun activities. The program will be largely in the single handed Topper dinghies and the double handed Mirror, Miracle or 2000 dinghies.

For (older children) who have completed our courses in earlier years:

The program will follow RYA Youth Sailing Level 2,3 or 4  syllabi’s and will use Topper and Laser single handed dinghies and Mirror, Miracle and 2000 double handed dinghies.

For Adults:

For adults new to sailing the program will follow RYA  Sailing Level 1 syllabus and those that have completed our courses before the program will follow the RYA Sailing Level 2 or 3  syllabi’s. All courses will use Pico and Laser single handed dinghies and Mirror, Miracle and 2000 double handed dinghies. A combination of single and double handed dinghies will be used throughout the course.

Afternoon Consolidation of Skills

In the afternoon of the above training and development dates, there will be experienced people on the water offering advice and guidance. During this time attendees can elect to practice their skills or simply enjoy cruising – all of which qualifies as relevant hours in the sailor’s log book and so count toward their qualifications.

Volunteers Are Welcome

All of our trained RYA instructors and helpers are volunteers. As with any volunteer group, the courses can only run if we have enough staff to man all areas of the club, to ensure a safe and productive sailing programme. Please let us know if you would like to help in any way by completing the Pre Registration Form, we have many roles on, off and around the water.
